COUNCIL OFFERS FREE ADMISSION FOR 18-AND-YOUNGER
"Dear Council Members,
This brief passage was written by our June 20 guest speaker. And it is not fiction.
"The secret police came for me at two in the morning… [One said] 'She needs to come with us right now. They want to see her at the Dhahran police station…' That previous afternoon I had been pulled over by the traffic police for the 'crime' of driving my brother's car. The specific citation was 'driving while female'."
This past rainy Saturday gave me the perfect excuse to devote much of the day to reading a remarkable book about a courageous woman, Manal al-Sharif. Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman's Awakening tells her story of growing up in Saudi Arabia in a relatively poor family and how she later became a leading activist who was imprisoned for challenging the cultural taboo of women driving.
In 2012, she received the Human Rights Foundation's Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent, the same year that TIME Magazine named her as one of its "100 Most Influential People in the World."
We are hosting Manal as part of our KRLD Summer Series on June 20. This would be a terrific program for you to bring your teenage children/grandchildren to let them meet someone who has received global respect for her work in human rights.
People ages 18 and under will be admitted without charge, everybody else pays just $10.
I look forward to seeing you at this inspirational program."
