Wilshire’s Thursday afternoon knitting group (Knit Unto Others) is crafting baby booties to contribute to a future installation called the Gendercide Awareness Project.
The Dallas collective hopes to display 11,700 pairs of handmade baby booties from all around the world. Each pair will represent 10,000 missing women and girls. “Gendercide” refers to the elimination of baby girls and women in certain parts of the world through selective abortion, infanticide, starvation and medical neglect.
The visual installation will premier at the International Women’s Peace Conference, to be held in Dallas in 2015.
