"She Says Women Are the Key to Lifting the Fortunes of Families in the Developing World.

Together with her husband, Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates , Melinda Gates has dedicated billions of dollars to reducing childhood mortality, developing vaccines and improving U.S. education. Now, she is leading a push to put women at the center of global economic development.

Ms. Gates this fall unveiled a multiyear effort on the part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to invigorate funding for projects focused on women and girls. She says the effort is crucial for lifting the economic fortunes of families in the developing world and builds on the foundation’s current multibillion-dollar projects in family planning and maternal-child health.

In an interview, Ms. Gates discussed this new push by the foundation, which made grants totaling $3.6 billion in 2013. She also talked about working with her husband, and their efforts to persuade the world’s ultrawealthy to join Warren Buffett , Larry Ellison and 100-plus other billionaires in dedicating most of their wealth to philanthropy."
