Nepal (Kathmandu)
In Kathmandu, Nepal, a new women’s cooperative, organized by Hands in Outreach, is training 12 mothers who will meet every Saturday morning to learn to knit baby booties.
These women earn $1 per day working as maids, carrying bricks and sand on construction sites, or selling roasted corn and peanuts in the street. Their homes are unheated, even in the current winter. Families of five or six live in a room the size of a closet with intermittent electricity and poor sanitation. Most of the women are illiterate, having at most a second grade education.
